I've already written about Liar Game, but it's been thirty chapters since I did, and now the story is really going places. Places that you want to be. Why? Because Akiyama is smarter and cooler than Light, Lelouch and that one Hiyama guy combined. Yes. I said it. And do you want to know why this is the case? Because he's not completely insane. That's right. A manipulative genius who doesn't want to rule the world and isn't completely centered on himself. Novel. Oh, and the annoyingly chipper female lead who's a complete idiot? She actually becomes NOT a complete idiot as the story goes on. Incredible.Characters aside, the story itself is pretty brilliant as well. Liar Game focuses on a series of "games" that people are forced to play in which they do their best to lie, cheat, and swindle as much money as they can from the other opponents. The games themselves are simple to understand, and extremely fascinating. I would love to conduct such games someday. My budget doesn't afford me to do something on such a grand scale, but maybe if I hand out candy or something...(that's not going to work). The undeniable weakness of Liar Game lies in the artwork. Everything is very plain, and proportions and perspective are off. That said, it's easy to tell what's going on, and the characters are easy enough to differentiate from each other, so I suppose the artwork is like the exact opposite of shoujo manga. Not nearly as pretty, but at least I know what's going on.
If you like mind games, puzzles and a story full of plot twists, then read Liar game now. Seriously.

Yeah Liar Game is awesome!
Kaiji is another great manga/anime with gambling games in the same vein.
Also One Outs by the same author as LG is brilliant too.
Oh yay, finally! Someone who thinks that Akiyama from Liar Game is better, if not waay way wayyyy better than Death Note and Code Geass b/c frankly, they're both OVERRATED. -___-" I used to like Death Note a lot, but Light started to get on my nerves. And when my mother (I know, I know) started to read it, she flat out told me she didn't like Death Note because Light was a moronic idiot who was out of proportion.
But I still do think that Akiyama has personal demons.
Aah, shoot, I forgot to add:
I like the artwork! I think it's actually a little more realistic, and the proportions do get better as time goes on. I think I'm just tired of seeing the same old artwork over and over and over....
The artwork for Death Note was absolutely fantastic though.
@Anon01: I keep hearing good things about One Outs. Since it's by the same author, I will definitely bump it up my queue of things to watch.
@Anon02: I'm sure Akiyama has personal demons, but he doesn't use it as an excuse and he's not an idiot about it. I agree that Death Note's art is really nice. I've been a fan of that artist since Hikaru no Go.
Sigh...
I somehow feel like we're kinda alone when saying that Akiyama is cooler than light.
I'm 'naja' from liargame.net btw, and I was wondering if for my blog (liargame.wordpress.com), I could link here for my next post.
Thank you! :D
naja, I would be honored if you linked to me. ^-^
I consider Liar Game to be exhibit one in the theory that really, really good writing makes up for less-than-stellar artwork.
I also enjoy how close Akiyama comes to the manipulative genius stereotype while taking it in a completely different direction.
Oh, thanks Ou-Bento! :D
@Onnichi:
I'm halfway through that post about Light and Akiyama... getting there, slowly. XD
See, what I feel is that Akiyama barely skirts that stereotype of a manipulative genius. He definitely could have been that, but at the end of the first round when he returns the money-- it was an 'expected, but unexpected' moment. In fact, I'm not sure how much of that 'stereotype' he even fits anymore...
i just finished reading the latest scanlation (as of april 5) of Liar Game..
and yes, it is definitely great..
way way better than death note..
*no offense to those who love Death Note
death note seems to be superficial while Liar Game tends to be more realistic and works on the minds of the people..
definitely Liar Game overruled Death Note
How can you guys say that the artwork is subpar. I agree that the drawings may be a little more simple and repetitive than I would like, but I could not disagree more that the artwork is bad. The covers and the color pictures are just awesome imo. The only character whose appearance I'm not too fond of is Yokoya.
